Al Qaeda, Straight outta Compton (Part 1)

I work as  a business consultant, trying to solve seemingly intractable problems for companies. The one comment I have heard more than any other is a CEO saying ‘I just don’t know how to begin to address the problem.’

The last time I heard this comment was from a politician, describing the fight against Al Qaeda. A handful of respected ant-terrorism experts had given lectures, expressed their talking head opinions, the audience evaluated the opposing views and came to the conclusions that nothing we were doing addressed the core problem.

I would offer the following.  Look at Al Qaeda, see how it behaves.

• They are secretive
• Have a decentralised structure,
• They recruit primarily in places where opportunity and social mobility is non existant (forget the rich poster kid terrorists, for every one of them there are 100 foot soldiers in poor places).
• They initiate the recruits through us and them, violence and indocrination,
• They have their own language, narratives and stories woven from half truths to indocrinate.
• The group is everything, You are either part of the group or you are classed as an enemy (even if you are a muslim), and a  target
• Terrorism is the headline, but the daily operation is extortion, blackmail, drug trafficking. Criminal activities masked under religious cloaks. Criminal networks are created to facilitate generating cash for terrorism.

Anyone who has looked at MS13, or the other street gangs in the US immediately recognises Al Qaeda’s modus operandi.  They are eerily similar to the many other street gangs out there. MS 13 defined from Wiki:

The Mara Salvatrucha gang originated in Los Angeles, set up in the 1980s by Salvadoran immigrants in the city’s Pico-Union neighborhood who immigrated to the United States after the Central American civil wars of the 1980s.^[5][6] …..

Originally, the gang’s main purpose was to protect Salvadoran immigrants from other, more established gangs of Los Angeles, who were predominantly composed of Mexicans and African-Americans.^[7]

Exactly as with Al Qaeda, they started with  intentions of being protectors, and twisted that logic into an organisation that benefits just themselves, and projects them into positions of power.  No populous in the Muslim world (outside of Saudi Arabia) would elect these morons into power, so they now operate as a criminal gang, adding religion into the tools used to drive the group,  keep it together, hoping violence will yield the power they crave. But as demonstrated by the notorious Al Qaeda bank robbers in France, or MS13 in the states, criminality becomes the predominant theme, those who were supposed to be the recipients of protection inevitably become the victims.

It cuts both ways. If the US drone strikes some remote region as part of the war on terror, and in the process kills 50 innocents, they provide 50 families who are potential recruits for the AQ street gang.  Street gangs thrive on looking as if they are fighting the oppressors, the man, authority. Looking at Al Qaeda in this way, we can begin to see that tools we need to defeat and disassemble them are perefectly within our scope of experience, we have done it repeatedly with other criminal gangs. We don’t need to decalre war on other countries, or religions. We need to treat Al Qaeda as the parasites they are.

The first step with all parasites is that people must be made to realise they are being used, they must be given hope that they can run their own lives,  they must be given the tools and support to create change from within.

In Part 2 I will look at how street gangs spreading across the world is mirrored by AQ, how external funding (the Saudi’s again) needs to be destroyed, and more importantly how AQ is a sideshow for a much greater struggle between people who think they know what is good for the rest of us.

Whats the difference between Beck & Cheney..

What’s the difference between Glenn Beck schilling for Goldline by broadcasting his Fox TV doom report, and Dick Cheney schilling for Halliburton by broadcasting his lies about Iraq?

Glenn Beck’s act, artful with all the paranoia buttons, asks you to believe in a world constructed in his imagination, and then alleviates some of that fear by pushing Goldline. Buy this gold, sold at inflated prices and you will be a bit more secure, provided the Muslim left wing progressive Nazis don’t get you…

Vice President Dick Cheney’s act, cultured in the boardroom of Halliburton & delivered in the second best spot on prime time TV, read like the marketing pitch from an arms dealer, a mercenary company, a private army. “You were attacked before, I know they or someone who looks like them is planning to attack you again, so we will destroy them or someone who looks like them. This will keep you a bit more safe, but remember they are a constant threat. We are always needed..”

Beck sells Gold, Cheney sells ‘They or someone’.

‘They’ in Halliburton / Cheney’s evaluation, as any good company should view it, is the entity that delivers the most profit. Pick a target to attack which generates maximum revenue. You want a short high intensity war, with lots of munitions expended. You want a long, protracted occupation, with the ability to generate decades worth of revenues for support, logistics, private security etc. Iraq was a prefect target.

In both instances fear is amplified by the salesman, the aim to get you to buy the product. How many dollars of Fox viewers hard earned cash is currently sitting in Glen Beck’s bank account. Following the neocon war in Iraq, how much of the money from US taxpayers is currently sitting in Halliburton’s bank accounts. How much of that Iraqi oil money has been siphoned off into the Bush / Cheney circle of influence?

Are Becks ranting reliable? No.

Were Dick Cheney’s continual assertions about Iraq true? No.

In both instances the presented motive is weird, we don’t quite understand it unless we enter a bizarre world where logic and facts just don’t add up, so fear must be used to counter any reasoning. However step back, follow the money and all the spiel make perfect sense. They are salesman pure and simple…

Aftermaths

If it turns out the whole thing was a con, as in both these cases,  where is the accountability? In the Glenn Beck world the rest of the media, financial institutions and even some politicians are beginning to question the practices that Fox is allowing. It’s gaining momentum, and the outrage is quite palpable.

What about accountability in the Dick Cheney world? Where is the outrage, why aren’t newspapers and financial institutions questioning the movement of money from taxpayers to organizations associated with the people who initiated the Iraq war?

You can easily withdraw your support from snake oil salesman like Beck, the Financial regulatory authorities can deal with him. Yet we lose so much more of our hard earned cash to companies which host the likes of Cheney, Bush, Blair etc. Who stands for ordinary people against our political elite?

Which regulatory authority can I go to, to ask about this fraudulent war that cost so much money and so many lives? Who holds Bush, Cheney, Blair to account?

The difference, no one does….

Wahid: A believing, but fanatical, Christian could easily interpret words in the Christian Bible to rationalize violence and genocide.

The revelation this month in GQ Magazine that Donald Rumsfeld as Defense Secretary embellished top-secret wartime memos with quotations from the Bible prompts a question. Why did he believe he could influence President Bush by that means?

The answer may lie in an alarming story about George Bush’s Christian millenarian beliefs that has yet to come to light.

In 2003 while lobbying leaders to put together the Coalition of the Willing, President Bush spoke to France’s President Jacques Chirac. Bush wove a story about how the Biblical creatures Gog and Magog were at work in the Middle East and how they must be defeated.

In the winter of 2003, when George Bush and Tony Blair were frantically gathering support for their planned invasion, Professor Thomas Römer, an Old Testament expert at the university of Lausanne, was rung up by the Protestant Federation of France. They asked him to supply them with a summary of the legends surrounding Gog and Magog and as the conversation progressed, he realised that this had originally come, from the highest reaches of the French government.

President Jacques Chirac wanted to know what the hell President Bush had been on about in their last conversation. Bush had then said that when he looked at the Middle East, he saw “Gog and Magog at work” and the biblical prophecies unfolding. But who the hell were Gog and Magog? Neither Chirac nor his office had any idea. But they knew Bush was an evangelical Christian, so they asked the French Federation of Protestants, who in turn asked Professor Römer.

If you combine that with the 500,000 deaths in Iraq and use a complete moron to do the analysis, you could easily conclude that Christianity is somehow deeply flawed and a horrendous religion.

However most normal thinking people wouldn’t tar all Christians, or Christianity with the stupidity of the millenium nutters, dominionists etc. Yet that is what people do with Muslims. In … claiming all muslims are bad because of the acts of a few intolerant lunatics, and you can prove it by using an interpretation of Islam coming from those very same lunatics or from frauds like Robert Spencer or Bat Yeor.

Ithneen: I also wanted to say that you bring up an important point. People condemn Muslims for what they’ve done in the name of Islam. Yet, Christians tend to dissociate their religion from what Christians actually “do.” It’s always interesting to read what people admit they do in the name of their religious beliefs.

Thalatha: What struck me the most about Al Qaeda type terrorism is why they are making the religious link. I see it as a fringe grouping trying to convert muslims to a radical and new interpretation of Islam in order to gain a power base in muslim countries. They are trying to cause mayhem, provoke a backlash which ordinary muslims will be on the receiving end of, and then say aha, our credo was right all along, join our group.

The problem is that we seem to be playing their game, by their rules. Anyone who has fought knows that is the stupidest strategy possible. We need to highlight how extremists on all sides seem to be waging a private war for the souls of ordinary people.

Ithneen: I agree: it’s not about religion; it’s about gaining power. The excuse doesn’t matter: it could be the Great Satan or the Jew or even (and especially) other Muslims who co-operate with them or share their views. And, you’re right that the tactic is used by other power-seekers as well. In fact, though, history tends to show that fundamentalists are as hard or harder on their own kind than on their enemies.

Honour John Brown, but remember slavery still exists…

Insurrectionist, revolutionary, terrorist, murderer, hero.

John Brown’s violent and bloody abolitionist campaign shocked and drove the US towards freeing itself of slavery in the 19th C. He was feted in the North, controversial everywhere. His campaign certainly sparked something, the downfall of slavery justified his actions in many eyes. Yesterday was the anniversary of his birthday, 210 years since his birth, 151 years since his hanging.

Yet today, slavery still thrives. We see daily evidence of the white slave trade or movement of women for use in prostitution. This is heinous, but because the target markets are westernised countries, the crime is perfectly within the reach of the western nations to curb. (Please excuse my grouping of western, I can think of no other appropriate phrase).

What is unsolvable is the issue of slavery in other regions. Islamic countries, tribal lands, countries where a combination of cultural and the societal norms view slavery as just trading of commodities. African and asian slaves are being sold freely in many countries, enroute for a lifetime of servitude.

Where are today’s John Brown’s to emancipate these hidden masses?

Fight the Propaganda

Figures from religion of peace.com (17 March 2010 – 17 April 2010) claim that in one month of “Islamic Attacks” [sic], there were 132 atrocities.

They don’t tell you that 81% of the attacks were on Muslims.

On the notoriously anti-Islamic website, ReligionofPeace.com, there seems to be a constantly growing list of incidents from around the world, which the editors of that site link together to try and sow a message of virulent hatred. Just looking at the figures one would assume that all these Muslims are attacking non Muslims everywhere, thus showing that all of Islam is evil. If read without analysis or critique, the site easily sways those who delve no further into what they are being told.

So I checked.

What the editors don’t point out is that the overwhelming majority of the victims are also Muslim. 81% of the attacks were on Muslims. What would they, the victims, say about this hatred of Islam? What would they say about the linking of these attacks as  indicative that they, the victims blown apart, are somehow carriers of evil?

Studying terrorist motivations and the response from the rightwing vultures, one can see this is not a war of Islam versus the world. This is a war of the extremists versus the rest of us. Whether those extremists are Islamic terrorists, or wingnut Islamophobes.
